St Michael the Archangel Church & Mary Anning's Grave

St Michael the Archangel Church & Mary Anning's Grave
The front of this church is fully rendered and for the first time, I decided to take a look around the back, which is where these pictures were taken. At the side was the grave of Mary Anning, along with her brother and three of his children who died in infancy. All very sad, as he was only 53 and Mary was just 47. Lots of fossils have been placed alongside the grave by people passing by.

Mary Anning was an English fossil collector, dealer, and palaeontologist who became known around the world for important finds she made in Jurassic marine fossil beds in the cliffs along the English Channel at Lyme Regis in the county of Dorset. Recently, a film has been made of her life, starring Kate Winslet.

From your vantage point the church looks like its gradually sinking into the ground. That is quiet a memorial stone, it stands out telling a family history in just a few short words.

I can see what you mean Maurice :) The road is between the church and the white house shown in this shot, and there are about 15 steps up to the church, which has been newly rendered at the front. It still had some scaffolding in place.
Have a lovely new week.

Thank you Roger. I wonder why the front is rendered? There are some nice sea views from the back as well.

A number of reasons, the most common is the faced stone on the weather side of a church often deteriorates and render is the cheapest option, also many church walls were built with an inner and outer skin and a cavity filled with rubble, damp getting to the rubble often caused the outer walls bow.

A nice set of images of a very sturdy looking church, graveyards can tell some fascinating stories .Next to my Grandads grave there is one of someone who died in the wreck of the Stella, many years ago I went to the reference library to find out about it and they gave me the Times from 1899 the story in there compared to what really happened was quite different

Thank you Peter. Sophie is also interested in looking around old churchyards. She called me over to show me another stone where it stated that the person died 100 years to the day that we were there. An interesting story you tell Peter. We get so many bits of information from gravestones, but unfortunately the poorer people of the time had no money for stoned :(

In Ticknall church yard there some iron crosses with a ring around the four arms nothing on them, I made enquiries one of the Harpur Crewe family at Calke Abbey didn't like the thought of poor people being buried in unmarked graves and bought these so the church could mark the graves

I like Peter's description of the church as sturdy. Sad to think of those infant deaths and of Mary and her brother. I like that people leave fossils. She's not forgotten.

It's a good and correct description Jean. Next time I am in Lyme, I will try and find a fossil to place on the grave.

Such a beautiful church............I don't think I've seen one with those battlement-type features. I especially like the stone rendering and the colour of the arched window surrounds. A nicely detailed image of the grave as well. I only heard of Mary Anning a few years back when my grandson was doing some fossil research for a school project. What an amazing lady - who was almost missed by history!

I must go and visit the church and grave myself..........and I'm sure my grandchildren will be fascinated. Thanks for sharing Rosa.

There is quite an interesting short drama/documentary on youtube if you haven't seen it: www.youtube.com/watch?v=qNOh-85_Dmc

Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Keith Burton club
Thank you Keith. I liked the honey coloured surrounds of the windows. I will have to look into the history of the church more, as I would be interested to know why the front is rendered. There was some lovely piano music being played inside the church.

I expect your grandson was interested in the strange fossils that were discovered by the lady. Sophie loves to hear and read all about them. Thank you so much for the link. I haven't seen it before. The lady in that is much for like Mary Anning than Kate Winslet! I will show my granddaughter next week :))

A delightful little church Rosa and great PiPs. I like the fact that people leave fossils at the graveside. It is quite sad that she didn't receive the recognition she deserved in life, mainly because she was a woman. Happy Sunday Rosa

Thank you Carol. We thought it was a lovely idea to leave the little fossils. You are so right in what you say. I'm am pleased she is being recognised for her discoveries now though. If you get the chance, click on the lovely link that Keith left me.

What an interesting story your beautiful images tell, dear Rosa! I like this lovely church and its churchyard especially. So many stories are silently told ... among them, Mary Anning's . I must confess I didn't know about her, but it so nice to see that her memory and her work have not been forgotten. Thank you for sharing all this and have a nice new week, dear friend.

Thank you for your kind comments dear Adele. Coming from Dorset, it is something I had always been brought up with, but it is good that her story is now being told and even made into a film. Keith left me a link to a short film about the lady that I had never seen, which is a delight to watch. I hope you have a good week ahead Adele, and keep safe from the dreaded virus!
Best wishes, Rosa.

A really nice collection of this church with the impressive stonework. I like the contrast between the deep honey colour of the window stonework and that of the walls. An interesting graveyard, as are most of them if you can take the time to have a good look around. Don't you think that If Mary Anning had been a man she would surely have been a 'Sir'. Thanks for the interesting notes.

Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Doug Shepherd club
Thank you very much for your kind comments Doug. Yes, I love to investigate churchyards. I thought many of these would be difficult to read, being so close to the sea, but most of them were legible. Sophie found one that was 100 years old to the very day we were there.
Oh yes, I do agree with your last comment.
