Weymouth's Bandstand Pier

Weymouth's Bandstand Pier
Weymouth Bandstand Pier is one of the few Art Deco structures dedicated to live music while being lulled by the sound of waves.
1939. Opened with a design initially for music performance with 2400 seats.
1970. Addition of arcade, restaurant and gift shop.
1986. The seaward side of the pier was demolished leaving the Art Deco entrance arcade.

054 Art Deco Pier Bandstand.

Thank you John. I don't usually walk this far along the promenade when Sophie is with me but she seemed happy to. Cheers, Rosa.

Thank you Roger. I like them too. Have to take care of the ones we still have. I remember a long time ago seeing a row of art deco semi's in Torquay. I hope they are still there.

Beautifully captured Rosa..............I really like the light and the long shadows. The building itself is quite lovely............I'm another fan of art deco buildings and this one seems to have been looked after pretty well. A super pair of images!

Thank you Keith. In the late 1960's I remember by father taking us all to see the wrestling in this building. All the famous names of that time. I remember we found it funny, so it was probably very well choreographed! I have never been there when the bands have played, but would like you, I do like the style of building.

Ha, ha..........I'm guessing Big Daddy, Giant Haystacks, Kendo Nagasaki, Mick McManus and Co ;-))

Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Keith Burton club
Definitely the last two Keith. Also Jacky Pallo, I think in a tag team and another that us kids all wanted to win but I can't remember his name. He was from Tonga though. There were some right comedians in the audience ;-)

Ha, ha............My Mum loved the wrestling - I can remember her shouting at the telly when it was on :-)

I like your pictures but I especially liked what you had to say about the building. Such a lot of history here. Thanks for the show! I agree with Keith, the long shadows are super. :)

Thank you for your very kind comments Janet. It is a pity that the actual pier is not there now, but as long as they look after this buildings, that's not so bad.

I looked them up Peter. Some lovely art deco cinemas in the midlands as well, including the one in Melton Mowbray. I spent a very nice day there with my mum a few years ago. Bright, frosty and sunny here today.

Really nice shots of the very well preserved and maintained building Rosa. I love the simplicity of the architecture, simple clean lines but with character.

All the best, Doug

Yes I think that's what is so nice about art deco buildings. Many cinemas in that style, many now gone unfortunately. Thank you for your kind comments.

All the best, Rosa.

Hi Rosa

It looks so clean and tidy here! Maybe all the layabout holiday makers have gone home!
And you got the balcony in there for HFF too!

Best Wishes, HFF, and a Good Weekend

Hi Peter,

Very much a family resort. It was half term for Somerset but Weymouth being in Dorset had already had theirs...so nice and quiet for us. HFF to you for spotting another fence ;-))

Best wishes, Rosa.

Good to see that at least part of the original building is szill there though the ground floor looks changed. In the main photo it looks like an ocean liner!
