The River Stour at Blandford Forum.

The River Stour at Blandford Forum.
More commonly known as just Blandford. Almost all of Blandford's buildings were destroyed on 4 June 1731 by the "great fire", which was the last of several serious fires that occurred in the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. The fire began in a tallow chandler's workshop on a site that is now The King's Arms public house. Within a few hours almost 90% of the town's fabric had gone. The town was rebuilt over the next ten years to the designs of local architects John and William Bastard. Bottlenecks were removed and streets realigned in the new town plan, which also provided a wider market place. As well as residential and commercial property, new buildings included a new town hall, school and church. The redesigned town centre has survived to the present day virtually intact.

Next to the town bridge is the entrance to Bryanston School.

I agree Peter. Let's just hope it never happens again. I don't mind the photos of snow, but I would rather not experience any just yet!! Had a great dog walk thank you. Have a good new week.

Your main images is beautifully composed Rosa. The trees leading off into the distance along the river give nice depth with colours, light and shadows completing a great picture. The subject of the PIP is very nicely captured also, again with good light and shadow balanced. Thanks also for the interesting information.

Enjoy the rest of Sunday, Doug

This is a terrific shot Rosa.................wonderfully composed with gorgeous light and colours. It has quite a painterly look to it. An interesting narrative too.

I also like the image in the PiP............lovely light and dappled shadows and a very attractive archway and entrance.

I love the perfect colour contrast between the reeds and the water. I like the way, Rosa, you have captured the leaves just on the point of making their autumnal transformation.

The architecture of the school entrance is amazing.

Cheers,

Joe

There’s always a lot to learn about England in so many pictures of yours, Rosa, a tempting invitation to see so many charming places I’v never seen!

There is a lot packed in to a small country Adele ;-)) Thank you for your kind comments. I love seeing the wonderful pictures on here from so many different countries. I visited many after seeing them on Panoramio! I don't tend to travel so far now, but I am tempted again from what I see on Ipernity :))

What a breathtaking pair of pictures! Thanks for the information too, so interesting. Tragic to lose the town thrice, but I guess in your case, 4 time's a charm!

TY for your comment on my dahlia! Oh how I wish that you could visit this incredible dahlia garden in San Francisco. You would swoon with delight and then just pass out from the staggering size and numbers of varieties that are on exhibit. What a sight. Who KNEW there were so many kinds of dahlias?! I will have to see some of your pictures too! :)

(I did a search to find some pictures of your dahlias but could not find any, though I did see some lovely ones you photographed at another garden! Let me know if you have pictures to share! BTW, here is a link to my original photo shoot using my older camera. If you're interested, take a look...the conservatory is an awesome bit of architecture by itself, but totally overshadowed by the incredible gardens that surround it! :D www.ipernity.com/doc/290645/album/417591 )

Thank you very much for your kind comments Janet. I will take a look at the link you have kindly provided this evening.

The garden in San Francisco sounds wonderful! I was amazed at the many colours and varieties of dahlia when I visited the small garden to the castle in Dunster. The gardener was on hand to answer any questions. I loved the black variety....so unusual. The mind boggles at how many new ones I would see in San Francisco :-))

I tend to upload general flower pictures from my garden and they are in an album entitled...Flowers, Birds and Blossom in my Garden. My flowers did not fare so well this year with the long very hot summer. I'm sure the conditions will be back to normal next summer!!

All the best, Rosa

Rosa, I just saw your comment above and will go to visit your flower album! :) And thank you for your long and detailed reply to what I'd written! Regarding black dahlias, why I don't believe I got any pictures of black ones on my visit to San Francisco, but will agree--flowers that are black are just incredible to see!!

Heel mooi hoor. Er zit behoorlijk veel water in de rivier, lijkt me. In Nederland is de waterstand verschrikkelijk laag. Sommige kleinere rivieren staan nog steeds droog en da's niet goed!!

Groet, Christien.
