German boy in long stockings and garters (1952)
A German boy in the second grade (about eight) wearing a sweater, short trousers, and cotton long stockings with hose supporters. You can see the garter clasps clearly. He is obviously wearing what was frequently referred to as a Stumpfhalterhemd ("garter shirt")--a sleeveless bodice with four elastic supporters, two for each leg. This was standard school wear for boys up to the age of about twelve (or even fourteen) in the chilly months of the year in Germany (October through April).
