Pearl

Pearl
A photograph of Pearl's face. Pearl is a leghorn hen. Leghorns are one type of hen used in factory farm egg production in Canada. The hens are kept in tiny stacked cages their entire short lives. Their beaks are amputated so they don't peck at each other in frustration. After two years of continuous laying Pearl would be considered a "spent" hen and would be sent off to slaughter. For more information on factory farming in Canada go to the website of Canadians for the Ethical Treatment of Farm Animals by clicking on www.cetfa.com and visit the Vancourver Humane Society website to see their campaigns to improve the lives of farm animals.
