Kohler's Schwein, The Diving Pig

Kohler's Schwein, The Diving Pig
My son-in-law bought this print when he was in Quebec City. It is one of my favourites. I assume the artist is German as the painting is titled, Kholer's Pig (although I see the name Michael Sowa attached to the print). Schwein is the German word for swine or pig. While pigs might not dive off of boards, they, like all animals, have joy and pleasure in their lives. They have agency and thought and they feel love. Our astounding human hubris denies almost all animals, except our pets, these emotional qualities. These qualities did not just arise within the human family. If they could speak as humans do, they would be able to express their interest in preserving their own lives, their own well-being. However, it is easy enough to interpret what their interests might be and respond accordingly.
