Did we live there???

Did we live there???
THANK YOU soooo much for those friendly birthday wishes - REALLY appreciated :o) I had a great day with my family and friends (always surprises me that people remember birthdays because I am kindoff bad in those areas (sigh)).....

Anyways, those mails and guest-book messages meant so much THANKS :o) :o)

This house!!!! Is old BUT not that old... There are not that many years since we Icelanders lived in "buildings" like that. And can you see in back of the house, there is a cave. I suppose the cave had a meaningful purpose, but I will have to put my trust in my Icelandic friends to tell me what that was. There are so many ruins like that along the road going around Iceland, Hringvegurinn - many of which are a great subject for photographers :o) The colors were to blue, green and "modern" so I changed it to these brownish-golden"ish" - well, going to bed ZZZZZzzzz

Merkisteinn, franck, Arne, k2hsharpe and 14 other people have particularly liked this photo

Thank you Brin - en veist þú hvaða tilgangi hellirinn gæti hafa þjónað í þessu tilviki?? Eiginlega á of skrítnum stað til þess að hafa verið notaður fyrir dýr??'

Ég kom einmitt við á þessum stað í sumar og las mér eitthvað til og minnir að hellirinn hafi verið notaður sem hlaða. Það var mjög gaman að taka myndir þarna og reyndar víða á þessu svæði.

Flott mynd og skemmtileg vinnsla... það er ótrúlegt hvað það er stutt síðan við komum út úr moldarkofunum... þegar mamma var krakki þá bjó hún í bæ með moldargólfi í eldhúsinu, amma sópaði það reglulega með sandi... !

NÁKVÆMLEGA - það var rafmagnslaust hjá okkur um daginn í rúman klukkutíma, um kvöldmatarleytið... sem var frekar erfitt fyrstu mínúturnar en VÁ hvað það var orðið kósý hjá okkur eftir smá stund... Þá lætur maður aðeins hugann reika til fyrri tíma sem voru nefnilega fyrir alveg ótrúlega stuttu síðan....

Einmitt!

That's incredible. My first thought about the cave was that it was used for cooling, but then I immediately remembered that of course it already IS cool in Iceland so they probably didn't need that... :p

Ragnheidur has replied to Mojca
Muhaha, correct - no need for a cooling cave :o)

Oh darn, I missed it... So here's a very late Happy Birthday!
(I am absolutely terrible with remembering these things, one year my wife and I forgot our anniversary, so at least I'm not alone in my poor memory).

OH my - My husband would NEVER forget our anniversary BUT I would!!! So I am in the same category as you regarding birthdays and days to remember - hey, thanks for the Birthday wish :o)

so many abandoned buildings
you photograph.
Makes me wonder why the people left?

I assume built close to where they made their livings?
Those lifestyles no longer exist, or valid?
Perhaps no electricity, no sewerage, no phone?
No modern comforts we all have come to need.

But I would think such lovely buildings
in such wild and beautiful landscapes
would attract people as weekenders?
I guess not.

A mystery I've often wondered on
when I viewed your images
but never got around to asking about.

I hate bloody mysteries !!!
:-)))

I am so sorry for not seeing this comment and question before - somehow missed it??

To answer the q. In those days (more then 100 years ago) people lived in those houses made of mud, grass and basically the earth!!! There was no electricity as you say and nothing but the basics... No one uses those kind of houses anymore, except for a few used for exhibit... It is cold and very moist inside so people had to use a lot of wood and fire to make their homes warm and cosy :o) Which was probably not that healthy thinking of all the smoke...

Well, there are also the other houses I like taking pictures of, that are abandoned only because they are old and not worth the effort of making them "work" again - people just build new ones...

I guess that is the circle of life :o)
