Gibb Square

Gibb Square
...on Gibb Street, Digbeth, Birmingham UK

On the right is the former Bird's Custard Factory and the building on the left was known as 'The Greenhouse', which is now home to a hundred studios\offices and small retail units.
Being a Sunday the street was quiet but the loudness of the buildings requited that.

Katja, Jan Hemels, tiabunna and 2 other people have particularly liked this photo

You know how some things can be so ugly that they become beautiful................... well this scene is heading that way !

It has taken over 20 years to turn this derelict industrial area of Brum into the 'creative quarter" it is now known as. You clearly believe they are getting there ;-)

Those colours certainly leap out!

Twenty five years ago it would have made a dreary mono image, even on a colour film.

Going back to London after six+ years I am surprised how many buildings, especially out of the very centre, have large murals on them, clearly as part of their intended 'look', rather than as unauthorised graffiti. Clearly this is a current urban fashion. One wonders how planners will react if something like this one needs to be replaced as fashions move on.

It has been many years since I worked or walked around London, but I'd expect to see many changes if I venture up there again. I don't think it is just Brum which is promoting more cheery city centres as the like of Bristol, Liverpool and Manchester (to name but a few) are also working towards brightening up inner cities. Planners are governed by local politics where conservatively minded people seem to be outnumbered. But what do I know, I just shoot what I see!

How colourful. I'm surprised by many of your interesting pictures of Birmingham. It's so near to where I grew up in Staffordshire, yet I never got further than New Street Station and Lewis's.

Until 2 years ago I had not visited the city since my teenage years and apart from NSS I don't recall seeing anything apart from Snow Hill and the Bull Ring. They were all scary places then and I would much rather see the city as it is today. There's so much to photograph, yet I rarely see 'good' photos of the new Brum.
