Magical mystery tour
When night fell the place became magical... seriously... I kid you not. Looks better in the original size! -
Brand new
First sight of the new mountain being created! The jeep at the bottom is purely placed there for size comparison... kind of... :D -
First view
On the way to the site of the eruption on Fimmvörðuháls... bouncing in a modified jeep over the Mýrdalsjökull glacier... magnificent! -
Bouncy bouncy
I've never been in a jeep trip over a glacier before... so not only got I to see the eruption but I also got my first 4x4 highland/glacier trip ;o) -
A route with a view
The view from Mýrdalsjökull glacier out over the Atlantic ocean in a sunny -20°C weather :o) -
By the light of the lava lamp
There is something so otherworldly about this... I kind of like the headlights at the bottom of the photo! -
Shooting from the... ashy knoll
This is where the helicopters landed and allowed people to go out and take photos. This is a composition of 4 photos, there are "only" 2 helicopters, one on the ground and one in flight ;o) -
Lava and stars
This is what was left of the lava "falls", not much action but incredibly beautiful nonetheless. Got some stars there too :o) -
Preparations
The jeeps being prepared for the drive over the glacier, some of the air has to be let out of the tires. -
Hot inside!
This close up one could easily feel the warmth of the lava... no need for gloves or anything in spite of the bitter frost on the site :o) -
Volcanic panorama
Panorama of the eruption site, made up of three photos. It shows the new volcano and the lava flow. The day after we were there a new rift opened up quite close to the people watching, so now it is forbidden to go any nearer the volcano than 1 km. I rec… -
