Smiling the best he can
I overstepped a major personal threshold the other day. I went downtown and tried my hand at non-candid street portraiture, that is to say I walked up to a stranger and asked if I could take his picture. I must say, it was harder for me to do that than most things I've done... I'm extremely shy in that way! ... and this is not something I see myself doing again! ;o)
This is Valdi, one of the unfortunate ones that have no place to call home. At first he said no to me, but he wanted to talk. After we had talked for a while and he had shown me his bag and its content, he suddenly wanted me to take his picture. But when I started shooting he became very shy, like a child. I took a few, but I like this one best.
Try concealing one half of his face with your hand, and then the other half. He's smiling on the left, but it's almost like he's crying on the right...
A HUGE thanks to Ragga who helped me with the b/w processing! :o)

concerning those ' non-candid ' images ... i try to communicate without words first -
see how somebody reacts when i look at him or smile - i often have my cam around
anyway .. - then i ask if i may take a picture . i'm surprised how often people react
in a positive way . other times , they ask me if i'd take a pic of them when seeing
me with my camera
