Night at the aluminium plant

Still uploading "oldies" :o) This one is taken last summer.

Just outside of Hafnarfjörður where I live, there is an aluminium plant. It is situated in a very beautiful place where the lava meets the ocean. Strange mix...

Looks better in the original size.

Yes, such a peaceful - yet powerful - photo. A sleeping lion, perhaps...

As I sit here I am listening to a track by David Lowe called Lilly which is very laid back and thoughtful...

And this got me thinking.... Am I correct that Iceland processes bauxite ore for other countries? It gets shipped to you for heating and conversion to aluminium - which uses a lot of electricity. Perhaps Iceland is ideal for this because of your geothermal power??? Making the price attractive...

There you go... Said I was being thoughtful... Don't worry, it won't last!! :-D

Well Nigel... you got me there! I must confess that I don't know very much about the aluminium industry here in Iceland, even though it has been in the press a lot, especially since they are talking about building some more plants... two I think :o)

And you're welcome to be thoughtful on my photos anytime! :D

EDIT: I did some research on Wikipedia ;o) and this is what I found:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Economy_of_Iceland#Aluminium
The second plant they are thinking of building would be near Húsavík, my birthtown.

Hmmm. Interesting. Good to read that some are not so happy about such a large new factory (Bjork and her Mother etc) - especially since it is so close to my friend's home town!!

I guess that right now Iceland needs all the investment in alternative industries that it can get. One up-side is that the plant would use geothermal power which is both cheap and environmentally friendly. Great for jobs in and around Húsavík, but a little scary all the same...

That is exactly the debate here... jobs and money vs. the environment...
