Home away from home

This is a small lagoon just above the beach at Djúpalónssandur. By this little lagoon there are ruins of shelters where the seaman lived during the fishing periods, away from their families, often enduring harsh weathers.

This place was most active from the 15th century till the 19th century and it is thought that at some time, up to 600-700 people rowed from that place.

Yes, a very hard life, living there without any comforts, rowing in all weathers, dragging the boats by hand up on the sand... but the nature there is one of the most beautiful in Iceland :o)

Júbb, hárrétt! Gaman að fara hringinn á Snæfellsnesinu og sjá hvað jökullinn er mismunandi frá öllum hliðum :o) Flestir taka mynd af honum sunnan megin frá, en mér finnst hann líka rosa fallegur norðan megin frá :o) (tók samt enga mynd af honum þar...)

When going somewhere on holidays I try to find out about people living there a little more than it is described in typical tourist guides. It happend when I decided to go with my 11month old son to Iceland. There are a lot of fascinating stories (saga) about your country and your countrymen. All that had a huge influence upon me. Great you want to share your photos and comment to them :)

Pixiepro replies:
I agree, I want to know about the places I visit, who lived there and what happened there... and whenever possible I like to add a little "saga" to the photos I post because it interests me and I loooove to share it! :o) Thank you so much Viola for your comment and your interest in our country :o)
