The White Tower

Construction of the Tower was begun by William, the Conqueror c. 1078 and completed 10 years after his death in 1097. It was the first structure built in the tower complex. It is 90 feet to the battlements, 118 feet from east to west, and 107 feet from north to south. Its walls are 18 feet thick at the base and 11 feet thick at the top. The Waterloo Block

Also known as the Waterloo Barracks. It was build in 1845 to replace the Grand Storehouse which was destroyed by fire in 1841. The Crown Jewels are housed in the west end near the Chapel of St. Peter as Vincula. The Tower of London, London, England. Scanned 35mm negative. (Eng-05020)

Big Ben

This is the 315 foot high clock tower of the Houses of Parliament. It was completed in 1858. It was originally named St. Stephen's Tower, was renamed Elizabeth Tower in 2012 to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II. However, it is more commonly known as Big Ben which is actually the nickname for the enormous bell, originally called the Great Bell, which is installed in the tower. The nickname is thought to have been derived from Sir Benjamin Hall, Commissioner of Works at the time, but another theory is that it came from Ben Caunt, a champion heavyweight boxer of the 1850s. The Queen's House

Tower of London - Built c. 1530 in the reign of Henry VIII, the Queen's House is currently the home of the Resident Governor of the Tower of London. Originally, the Lieutenant of the Tower lived here and was the custodian of several famous prisoners: Lady Jane Grey, Guy Fawlkes and the last prisoner held in the Tower: Rudolf Hess in 1941. Anne Boleyn is said to have stayed here before her execution as well. She was the 2nd wife of Henry VIII who was beheaded on Tower Green for the crime of adulterous treason. Rose Window

Westminster Abbey, London, England - The huge rose window tops the north transept which is supported by series of flying buttresses. All the stonework is from a 19th century restoration and only indicates in a general way the detail that was there before. The original abbey completed in 1065 was replaced by Henry III. The work was begun in 1245 and continued until 1267 when funds ran out. It did not begin again until a century later and continued on and off until 1506. Scanned 35mm negative. (Eng 24018)
