September 11, 2013 farmer's market haul

September 11, 2013 farmer's market haul
Plums, pears, lettuce, broccoli, peaches, strawberries, raspberries, butter tarts.

(The flash decided that the kitchen was bright enough. Resulting in a dark photo. Grrr.)

Plums! I am not sure if I've ever had an excellent plum in my life. I'm quite certain I've had a few mediocre plums.

I am also certain that I haven't had a decent peach since 1981. Or maybe 1982. No kidding. It was whatever was the last year that my parents did canning. (Grocery store peaches ought to be a capitol offense.)

Strawberries: the thing there is that in order for them to get really good, you basically have to let them sit until ONE of the strawberries in the box is starting to go moldy. When that happens, the rest will be ripe. LOL Such are the travails of industrial produce. :(

Grocery raspberries aren't all that bad, actually, although, in Wisconsin, they are often just as easy to find in the wild, rather than paying $5 for a cup of them. Basically the deal with raspberries, IMO, is that there is no need to domesticate them, so the farmed ones are no different than the wild ones. I.e., they are all wild, and therefore all equally good. Of course, the big advantage with the wild ones is not having to sit in various refrigerated environments for however long before purchase.

Ah, but this isn't "industrial produce." This is straight off the farm, often picked during the night before coming to the market.

And I hadn't had decent peaches either, for a couple of decades, till I started buying them at the farmer's market. Now I ONLY eat peaches in August and early September, because these are the Real Deal and they actually taste like peaches! They're so good!

I won't eat the fake cardboard peaches sold in the supermarket any longer. They are crap. I wait till the season, and then I eat local. NOM NOM NOM.

Maia, I have been eating wonderfully all summer! It's almost doubled my grocery bill, but I have been determined to eat as much local, farmer's market food as I could, while it was available.
