'Knot on Call' by Pete Hellicar at The Sidings - Newhaven 5 10 2021

'Knot on Call' by Pete Hellicar at The Sidings - Newhaven 5 10 2021
This 'installation' was part of a publicity event, sponsored by a decorating supplies company, in support of the local Newhaven RNLI lifeboat. The texts are all quotations from books and poems about the sea and seafaring. They were printed out onto strips of paper, laid out on a table and then these were selected at random, from a much larger number, and applied to a donated dinghy.
The Sidings is the beginning of a new development on the east side of Newhaven harbour. There is a café with an outside seating area. Although it is close to the water, there is a slatted screen in between.
The area was once the site of the railway engine shed for the little tank engines that shunted the extensive dock sidings. There are photographs of the docks in the first half of the 20th century on display on the fences around the site.
