Hummingbird Hawkmoth on Valerian - Newhaven - 1.9.2014

Hummingbird Hawkmoth on Valerian - Newhaven - 1.9.2014
This is unusual because it is the only time I have seen a Hummingbird Hawkmoth this year and also because I don't ever remember seeing any other insect on a Valerian flower!
Previous photos of one of these moths, from 2011, are at www.ipernity.com/doc/philsutters/25644903 and www.ipernity.com/doc/philsutters/25644905

You don't have any choice with these delightful creatures, as they don't land on the flowers. I am sure they have a resting place somewhere, but when they are out and about looking for nectar, they just don't stop flying! Thanks for your comment, Nora.

Thanks, Tom. As usual, a collage is my solution to having a number of shots, which individually wouldn't be that eye-catching. I am glad you liked this one.
