Portland Bill

Portland Bill

Like many listeners to the BBC shipping forecast, I’ve long been captivated as the announcer intones his way round the various sea areas around the British Isles. Among them being “Dover – Wight – Portland” followed by phrases such as “south-east veering west or northwest, 4 or 5”.

Well, here’s Portland – or, to be more precise, the Portland Bill lighthouse, located on the southernmost point of the Isle of Portland in southern England. It overlooks the notorious Portland Race, whose currents spell danger to unwary mariners, and the hazardous Shambles Bank which lies three miles offshore.

For more than 300 years various lighthouses have stood on this spot. The present one was built in 1906 and its light, which flashes every 20 seconds, can be seen 30 miles (48 km) away.

ColRam, * Boes René *, Ronaldo Vieira de Carvalho have particularly liked this photo
