The Pawnee Buttes

The Pawnee Buttes
Located in the northeast corner the State of Colorado, approximately 60 miles / 97 kilometers from Cheyenne, Wyoming are the Pawnee Buttes. The Buttes are at an elevation of 5,230 feet / 1,594 meters, and rise 300 feet / 91 meters above the prairie in the Pawnee National Grassland. The location is quite remote and the final 15 miles / 24 km is on a dirt road to an overlook.
The area was pristine when I visited in August, 1999. I have heard that over the past few years the area is now marred by oil wells and open evaporation pits. Oil tankers now traverse the roads that used to be very lightly used. So sad!!!

The original 35mm film image was made in August of 1999 with my Nikon FG and 70-210mm lens.

How strange !
Beautiful photograph !

Christiane, the buttes were formed by the wearing away of the surface around them. At one time the top of the buttes were level with the prairie. Quite amazing :)) Best wishes and many thanks, Michael

Fremyd, many thanks!! Hard to believe the top of the buttes were at the same level as the prairie many, many years ago before the prairie eroded. Best regards, Michael

Great composition and textures. The landscape has a parched look to it, you can almost feel the heat! Happy anniversary, Michael!
