Cactus Beer

Cactus Beer
"Shiner Prickly Pear" is a light lager brewed with the fruit of Prickly Pear Cactus, the label promises “just the fruit not the spines”:)) This is a summer seasonal brew.
The Spoetzl Brewery started in 1909 as the Shiner Brewing Association, founded by German and Czech immigrants who had settled around the central Texas town of Shiner, population now 2100. The town is located about 90 miles / 145 km east of San Antonio. They couldn't find the quality of beer they had known in their home countries, so they decided to brew their own. It has been in continuous operation ever since, including during the years of Prohibition, 1920-1933 when there was a nationwide constitutional ban on the sale, production, importation, and transportation of alcoholic beverages. It is the oldest independent brewery in Texas and one of the oldest independent breweries in the U.S.

How fun! I admit that I never had this particular style but in my defense I am not a big fan of Shiner in particular and with the current explosion of craft breweries there are just too many choices. Having that said I survived many trips to Texas on a Shiner diet.

Gottfried, I agree with you about the explosion of craft breweries. My wife and just completed a road trip to the east coast and sampling local brews gave us some new tastes. Brought a few of them back with us too :)) Best wishes, Michael
