Adult Blue Jay

Adult Blue Jay
Please press Z for larger view on black :)) This photo from my garden shows a mature Blue Jay visiting our birdbath. Mature Blue Jays have lavender-blue to mid-blue in the crest, back, wings, and tail plumage. The underside is off-white and the neck is collared with black which extends to the sides of the head. They are found from southern Canada through the eastern and central US south to Florida and in northern Texas. When mature they measure 22–30 cm (9–12 in) from bill to tail and weigh 70–100 g (2.5–3.5 oz), with a wingspan of 34–43 cm (13–17 in). They are members of the Corvidae family which includes crows, ravens and jays.

I have read that the colouring is not derived from pigments but is the result of light interference due to the internal structure of the feathers; if a blue feather is crushed, the blue disappears because the structure is destroyed, I have not tried this myself though.

Blue Jays are very intelligent, territorial, and able to mimic the calls of other birds.

Belle photo , le geai bleu est inconnu pour moi , à mon avis il ne doit pas migrer en Europe.

André, many thanks!! I believe you are correct about Blue Jays not typically being seen in Europe. They are quite wide-spread here in North America though. Best regards, Michael
