The first time you hear about it is at elementary school, "the Sahara desert" and everyone makes the connection to sugar but nobody dears to say it because they get immediately and mercilessly corrected. This results in a kind of complex, that accompanies Greeks all their life, not to pronounce Sahara as Zachara.
