That officially is a turn-up and not a sleeve... otherwise the old Tommy Cooper joke would not make any sense.

well, everybody expects a card from the sleeve nowadays, so a turn-up is better during gambling. By accident I use playing cards as bookmarks when nothing else isn't at hand :-D

Serge - I'm reminded how, in German, a glove's called a "hand-shoe."

I guess a pant-leg would be a "pant-sleeve"

well, you're right. The same in Dutch, a "hand-shoe". But let's not miss the whole point. Card gamers usually benefit from confusing the opponent. In this, is a "wrong" word of great help...
