1)of or relating to a transitional or initial stage of a process

2)occupying a position at, or on both sides of, a boundary or threshold.

I think that this falls into the second one - all very confusing - I have spent the week wondering whether trees make a sound if they fall in a forest and there's nobody there to hear them...
