Thanks Pam. The Park Service is restoring these and letting the rest way up the road and out of sight, rot. I had the privilege of knowing the caretaker of Elkmont back in the late 80s and 90s. J. T. Higdon lived almost all his life in Elkmont and when it was closed he and his sister Faye relocated about 25 mile away on the far side of Sevierville, TN. He died in 1997 at 83.

In the late 80s I had just started into the appliance service business working for my brother in law. It was a late stormy July afternoon- early evening in 1988 when I got sent to Elkmont to fix a refrigerator. By the time I got up there it was starting to get dark and a heavy thunderstorm rolled in. By the time it was over it was almost dark and very very foggy and I was lost but in Elkmont. Fortunately the service vans had a two way radio that used a repeater and I was able to communicate out. The dispatcher got JT on the phone and he found me and I followed him to the cabin. I got the fridge fixed and made a friend. Later on I went to work for myself and JT continued to use me for service work up until he died. I got to go into several cabins when they were still in use before the park closed them up in 1992. JT was s tall slender man with an upbeat attitude. His last couple years weren't easy for him. He had a stroke and lost his sight and could barely walk.
