Red-spotted Purple (Limenitis arthemis)(m) A first for here

Red-spotted Purple (Limenitis arthemis)(m) A first for here
Well.... after next to no butterflies... a "first" and Lifer for here and me today bringing my butterfly species total here to 51.

This is a Red-spotted Purple (Limenitis arthemis) male.

Not a pretty background but you take what you can get ... he was taking minerals off the stones !

Günter Klaus, Rainer Blankermann, Ecobird, Luc Reiniche and 61 other people have particularly liked this photo

A really beautiful butterfly. I don't think I've ever seen one. You are forgiven for the concrete background. ;-)

Thankyou Ronald !

They are usually more blue apparently and it really threw me a curved ball as all I could think initially was Spicebush gone different !!

Thankyou Maurice !

They love damp earth or stones. They can metabolise minerals from the mud or fine damp on the stones. I had spilt some water earlier and although it was dry then... it leaches minerals out in minute quantities.

I think the background really sets the colour of this lovely Butterfly, it seems to be very shimmery with what shows a metallic green in a way !!!...... could make a nice copy for a brooch....
Lucky find for you !!

Great shot and find, Pam! Maybe I'll run into your friend Jack and his dog down along the D&R canal sometime. We may be going out there again next week, before the fishing dies off for the year.

Thankyou John !

John hikes huge distances... out West and all over the country.. Alaska to Florida. He has visited us here 3 times. He is a very gentle shy soul. Recently lost his doggie Pal "Wesley" and has Jack now.. also a rescue. He hikes the canal and river alot in winter. If you are interested.. I can give you a link to his pics elsewhere. He actually lives not fare from Philadelphia

WOW!! What a knock-out beauty of a butterfly. How amazing you got a picture from above and so close!! You are the Butterfly Whisperer, clearly! :D What a nice shot. Love the details. And the LUCK! *shakes head* Astonishing.

51 species?!! HOLY COW!!! I would say I've photographed perhaps a dozen species on our property...you have me beat by a mile! NICE!! :)

Thank you for the comments on my fire pictures--I had no idea that your fireplace isn't real. I cannot stand fake fireplaces. To me they are outrageous and if I lived in such a house, I'd spend the money to remove it because I find them annoying and a constant lie that I see every day. It makes me think about the RVs we've seen on our scouting trips. Some of them have these fake fireplaces and they make me and Steve laugh in scorn. REALLY?!! Wow...just use a heater and get rid of that junk! :D

It has been so nice to see your comments, so thank you very much, Pam. *big huggggggs*
