Church on top of a mountain

Church on top of a mountain
Well, a "mountain" is rather inaccurate... actually... a pyramid

One third larger than the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt, this one is in fact, the largest pyramid in the whole world with a base of 450x450m (1476x1476 ft) and a height of 66m (217 ft)

It is located in the town of Cholula, 100km East of Mexico City.

In 1519 Hernan Cortes, commander of an army of Spanish conquistadors and warriors from Tlaxcala, was on his way to Mexico City (then known as Tenochtitlan).

Back then Cholula was the second largest city of the Aztec Empire, with an estimated population of about 40,000 to 100,000 people.

To make things short, the bold Señor Cortes had the city under siege for six days where he systematically killed unarmed members of the Aztec nobility, peasantry and priests in what would serve as an act to inflict fear and respect into the Aztec capital.

Years later after the fall of Tenochtitlan, Cortes went back to Cholula and had that church built on top of the pyramid which would serve as a symbol of the new God above the Aztec pagan gods.

However, even to this day, when excavations are made into old Mexican churches, it is not uncommon to find figures of Aztec gods buried underneath the churches, and specially right below the place where the main altars are located.

Original letter sent by Cortes to the Emperor Charles V relating the Massacre at Cholula, signed on October 30th, 1520 available in Wikipedia (Spanish)
