New Yorkers protest fracking 2014.7.1
Susan Modaress, Press TV, New York.
In an attempt to reduce its dependence on foreign oil, the United States has turned to fracking. However, the practice may be doing more harm than good, contaminating everything in its way. While inside Manhattan's Grand Hyatt New York Governor Andrew Cuomo was holding a fundraiser, these New Yorkers gathered outside demanding the governor to stop franking on their land. Chants Not only do they want the governor to keep fracking out of New York, they are also calling for a veto of the Port Ambrose LNG facility. While it has been pitched to the public as an import facility, protesters here say there's good reason to believe that it's actually intended to export fracked natural gas. Fracking or Hydraulic fracturing is the process of injecting a mixture of water, sand and chemicals at high pressure to extract oil or natural gas. While there are many fracking sites here in the United States, many have reported of ground water contamination, risks to air quality, migration of gases and chemicals to the surface, mishandling of waste, as well the contamination of water for livestock. Accidents and spills have contaminated cropland across the country. A recent court hearing ruled that New York's towns are now able to use zoning laws to ban hydraulic fracturing within their borders, however it's not yet clear if towns who may gain financially from franking will be willing to impose the ban.

Very relevant with our Conservative government in the UK ready to pollute anywhere with their promotion of fracking. Why do people vote for politicians with profit as their only basic principal?
