May Day 2013

May Day 2013
In France, May 1st is traditionally celebrated with outings looking for Lily of the Valley flowers. Couldn't find any in the area, except in flower shops of course.

Another connotation (thanks, Wikipedia) is that in the "language of flowers", the lily of the valley signifies the return of happiness. Legend tells of the affection of a lily of the valley for a nightingale that did not come back to the woods until the flower bloomed in May.

Anyway, so what does it have to do with lilac blooms? Nothing really besides the fact that I picked one on May Day - and assuaged my guilt by adding it to relevant NYC flickr groups. Oh and it's as good a reminder of happy springs as any.
