Northern States Power - Sioux Falls, SD
4160V risers and 69kV loop into the South Sioux substation. There are actually two subs in this enclosure - the one shown is the older 4160V section - a newer, larger section behind it puts out 13.8kV.

The lower riser on the dual riser pole is now permanently out of service; that circuit is fed from a 13.8/4160V step-down a block east. The sub was later removed and the 4160V system replaced by a pair of 13.8kV circuits.

I like that 69kV pole on the left!

Also nice to see the old potheads still in service. How often do you still come across them these days?

The only place around here where I still see these potheads is on the risers out of this and the Cliff Avenue 4kV subs. They are completely extinct everywhere else. The 4kV subs in the smaller NSP towns in SD all have overhead line exits.

That's interesting. I'm surprised that NSP/Xcel has gone through so much work to get rid of all the potheads. Around here in CL&P land, I find them all over the place on older parts of the grid. Perhaps NSP did not have much in the way of underground distribution in the early years?

I don't think there was a lot of 4kV distribution risers back then, but I do remember seeing one such riser that evidently served an underground vault - but that line is LONG gone.

All the 4160V visible in this shot has now been converted to one 13.8kV circuit. The pothead risers sit idle and the second circuit going off to the left has been wrecked out.

So I guess the story's ended now. Been quite a run! This picture does a nice job summing up the beginning--it's got everything from the pole that burned up to the old 4kV risers.
