A 'detail' image of the bottom of the Ubehebe volcanic crater in Death Valley, California.

The crater itself is pretty large, though arguably not so by volcanic crater standards, and makes a very interesting feature to walk around, certainly more interesting than the translation of its name, which is 'Big basket in the rock', though I have to concede that it's an accurate description (where 'big' is 'very big').

I really liked the black sand as a backdrop to the various other contrasting colours, not to mention that this was the closest thing I could manage to my recent images of 'lines in landscapes'!

For scale - which I left intentionally unclear when I made it! - see the Wikipedia images: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ubehebe_Crater This section is most of the height of the caldera... big, in other words!
