The Snow

The Snow
The snow came silently in the night
With quietness so deep.
It spread a purity, oh so white,
Formed lightly during sleep.

In the rookery, all is calm,
Not a sound from this band –
Dark shapes rigidly on the arm
Of ancient beech do stand.

A sunrise, easterly in the vale,
Its golden beams shine bright;
A kite glides easily down the dale,
Eye startled by the light.

The tired sheep hungrily in the white
Winter pasture stand still
And, waiting nervously, eye the kite,
And in turn, take their fill.

The snow came silently in the night.
