Fab Five Freddie Told Me

Fab Five Freddie Told Me
Looking at this picture prompted me to want to listen to Rapture by Blondie and so here's that video. (Oddly enough I don't think I'd seen it before..)
www.youtube.com/watch?v=pHCdS7O248g

"Toe to toe
Dancing very close
Barely breathing
Almost comatose
Wall to wall
People hypnotized
And they're stepping lightly
Hang each night in Rapture

Back to back
Sacroiliac
Spineless movement
And a wild attack

Face to face
Sadly solitude
And it's finger popping
Twenty-four hour shopping in Rapture

Fab Five Freddie told me everybody's high
DJ's spinnin' are savin' my mind
Flash is fast, Flash is cool
Francois sez fas, Flashe' no do
And you don't stop, sure shot
Go out to the parking lot
And you get in your car and you drive real far
And you drive all night and then you see a light
And it comes right down and lands on the ground
And out comes a man from Mars
And you try to run but he's got a gun
And he shoots you dead and he eats your head
And then you're in the man from Mars
You go out at night, eatin' cars
You eat Cadillacs, Lincolns too
Mercury's and Subaru's
And you don't stop, you keep on eatin' cars

Then, when there's no more cars
You go out at night and eat up bars where the people meet
Face to face, dance cheek to cheek
One to one, man to man
Dance toe too toe
Don't move to slow, 'cause the man from Mars
Is through with cars, he's eatin' bars
Yeah, wall to wall, door to door, hall to hall
He's gonna eat 'em all
Rapture, be pure
Take a tour, through the sewer
Don't strain your brain, paint a train
You'll be singin' in the rain
I said don't stop, to punk rock

Well now you see what you wanna be
Just have your party on TV
'Cause the man from Mars won't eat up bars when the TV's on
And now he's gone back up to space
Where he won't have a hassle with the human race
And you hip-hop, and you don't stop
Just blast off, sure shot
'Cause the man from Mars stopped eatin' cars and eatin' bars
And now he only eats guitars, get up!"

I always misread the "Keep Portland Weird" as "Keep Portland Wired" and then wonder why anyone would use that ('wired') as a slogan. I suspect I read it that way because some parts of Portland are getting to be too similar to hi-tech Bay Area neighborhoods.

This is what I hear. There is a lot of money coming into this city I know that much, it has it's positives and negatives. Problem is the people who made this city what it is are being forced further and further out or out completely. The rent is too damn high. I do wish I had come here sooner, about 15-20 years ago when I truly was young. I'd also like the perspective to now it would offer me. I hear a lot about how Portland used to be, I would have liked to have known what that was like.

It seems to be the national trend, cities either moving very quickly away from their past or sinking into it. My understanding is that Cincinnati (how did you ever learn to spell that??) and Louisville are also becoming trendy.

I've been in and out of Portland since some time in the 70's, though my experience has always been relatively short visits (2-4 days). In the late 70's/early 80's it was high on my list as I was exploring places to be both employed and comfortably gay (I had history with SF so ended up there.) But, in those days, Portland was generally a fairly funk, hippy, laid-back space, with some deserted downtown, and there was a sizable and enjoyable gay presence scattered loosely along Burnside. As has happened too often, we (gays) were a key part of stabilizing an area that was on a downward trend, but then got priced out.

It's not as bad as Mississippi at least. This type of thing seems to be happening everywhere these days. Gentrification will have us all living out of a garbage cans if we're not careful. "Enjoy it while it last" has been my motto for a while now...

We're all going to have to go out and resettle those old towns that became passe and aren't on the coasts.
