The White Cliffs

The White Cliffs
Don't be fooled by the peace and tranquility of this scene. I was almost blown horizontal up here.
This was taken on my excursion around Beachy Head on the southern coast of England.

Unfortunately I didn't have a nice bright blue sky, but I was grateful to have fine weather, at least.

These chalk cliffs look very dramatic, and the chalk is actually visible for quite a distance driving inland.
While the white cliffs of Dover are famous, large areas of the chalk substrate exists throughout Europe.

It is described as "Ninety million years ago the chalk downland of Northern Europe was ooze accumulating at the bottom of a great sea"

If ooze isn't your cup of tea, then try "It is a limestone made from the calcareous shells of miniscule planktonic organisms which became deposited on the sea-bed and which later hardened into chalk rock"

Pink Kat, Poulet Santivasa Anantnitivate, Eunice Perkins, LeapFrog have particularly liked this photo
