The Story of Whirley

The Story of Whirley
I am spending far too much time on this.

This is Whirley, a young wild osprey who hatched this year in a nest atop a rusting, hundred foot high loading crane alongside San Francisco Bay.

Whirley never knew she was on an Audubon Society nest cam, being watched by hundreds of people day and night. She fledged on the 4th of July, and the next night disappeared from the high nest. A sympathetic crew on one of the big Dutra barges found her barely floating in the bay. This is the photo they took of her, dripping wet, just after they fished her out

She was taken to a wildlife hospital, where the vet said she needed a CAT scan. More than the $1200.00 cost of the scan was collected from her viewers within an hour and she was sent off to a human hospital. The scan showed that she had serious internal injuries as well as broken bones, perhaps from flying into a wall or cable in the dark. Our brave little sea hawk had to be euthenized.

Rivet, her younger sibling, fledged a couple of days ago. The second time around has been hard for the humans who are watching. There are long periods now when the camera shows nothing but an empty nest. And times when we briefly glimpse awkward first attempts at aerobatics and landings. The chat which accompanies this video reminds me of the painful day when the car keys are first handed to a teenager: “How long has she been gone?” “You don’t think she’s trying to fly all the way across the Bay?” “Shouldn’t she be back by now?”

LutzP, Marie-claire Gallet, Pam J have particularly liked this photo

As a fellow cam-watcher I know how easily I engage with the small precious lives I'm seeing from my distant post.
