The Meadow That I Am the Mom Of

The Meadow That I Am the Mom Of
On the way to my bit of land in the Trinity Alps, I’ve been unlocking this Forest Service gate for 45 Years. Remembering when I was 20, I always feel a little guilty about the backpackers who must park here and walk the old mine road while we fat old property owners can ride.

Once long ago we came driving merrily out from our meadow to find that the locked gate padlock, swinging almost unreachable under its heavy bell housing, had been injected with glue.

As you can see below, it took infinite patience and a lot of time to clean the keyhole on that padlock and inset the key to open it. It felt very odd to be unwillingly locked away from civilization. It became apparent that we would be driving all night to get home. For a while, I thought other kinds of thoughts about the folks who had to park at the gate.
