The Living Inflatable Lizard

The Living Inflatable Lizard
Chuckwalla, a big lizard of the Mojave Desert.

Chuckwallas spend a lot of time basking in the warm sun. If you frighten them, they duck into a crevice and inhale until their bodies fill the space and they cannot be pulled out.

Chuckwallas are gentle vegetarians, by necessity eating plants hardened and only slightly green. But they are lovers of the tender blade and soft petal. Once, in the Grand Canyon, we sent a wild chuckwalla into a state of reptile-ecstasy by offering it fresh alfalfa sprouts originally intended for our salad.

I've never heard of this species. What great information! I bet there are times we'd all like to inhale our bodies ... like Thanksgiving! {:o)
