Obama is preserving the Mojave Mother Road!

Obama is preserving the Mojave Mother Road!
Went south of Death Valley last week to check on something new. And great!

A few weeks ago President Obama created a new National Monument called Mojave Trails. Among many other things it includes about 170 desert miles of highway, the most difficult section of Route 66.

Route 66, the Mother Road. Such an important part of the great Westward Expansion, the basic theme of American history.

First we stopped at the little basement museum in the magnificent old Harvey House in Barstow. (See note in photo.) The Route 66 Museum is run on weekends by local volunteers. Lots of fascinating old stuff and photos.

Barstow has never forgotten its part of the great story. Of course, the town’s name is mentioned (very briefly) in The Song. You know the one. www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jc8_Qs_y-xs

Last I heard of Route 66 was a TV series around the early 70s with a couple of guys charging up and down it in a beat up old Chevrolet, obviously from your documentary Laurie it is a major arterial highway within the US.

It surely was. But now it is in bits and pieces, usurped by a massive straight-through federal highway. I-40.

Cut off, many little stopping places on route 66 are now dead or almost dead. Radiator Springs, the imaginary town in the Pixar movie, Cars, is a delightful imaginary rendering of a Route 66 town.

Traveled that highway many times. It ran right through my hometown (Oklahoma City).
