Once, over on Flickr, I uploaded a photo of this stalwart, symmetrical incense cedar. Six ft. diameter at the base. Almost surely more than 400 years old. With false modesty I explained that I had a piece of paper which stated that I owned it, but I considered myself merely its steward.

Well, last winter when there was very little snow on the ground and the tree was probably ice-laden, some skirling stormwind came along and knocked 20 ft. off the top.

It will grow a new crown, but it will never be as symmetrical again. Of course, not many of us are perfectly symmetrical either.

Lorenzo Kjell Salmonson, RQ 01012015, Annemarie have particularly liked this photo

This nearby white fir, beheaded 10 years ago, has raised one of its top branches straight up and changed it into a new crown.

Great photo and great commentary. Perfect symmetry would be boring.
