Cat Ski Touring, page 2

Cat Ski Touring, page 2
(Second page of a photo story about a journey long ago in California’s High Sierra.)

Here I am in 1953, almost ready to ski off through the wilderness to Peter Grubb Hut. We had a demountable rescue sled which could be carried in a bag, then assembled and attached to a pair of skis.

On the sled: the snoozing baby secure in her Native-American-style-carrier, her face protected with a bandana. In back, a big cardboard carton containing a comforting old sweater and two cats. On top of the box, the Woman Skier’s Nemesis.

The Nemesis was a frozen turkey. Presented to me with very innocent bashful smiles. Since I was coming along, the two guys thought I’d like to cook a celebratory dinner on the small wood stove at the remote ski hut. Thanksgiving with all the trimmings. They tied the turkey on top expecting it to thaw on the trip in, so it would be ready, they suggested sweetly, for me to spend all the next day cooking.

The two men had read Scott of the Antarctic and, when they were not thinking of Thanksgiving dinner, were eager to practice man-hauling a sled.

I had read Scott of the Antarctic and had no intention of ever man-hauling a sled.

Off we went, the cats silent, the two men carrying heavy old army ski rucksacks (see one sitting like a boulder in the snow on the left) and pulling steadily. I skied alongside, listening for complaints from the baby or the cats, and dubiously eyeballing that rock-hard frozen turkey that was supposed to thaw in the California winter sunshine.

More tomorrow

(The entire story is developing in my album, “Cat Ski Touring".

This is another good yarn. You were quite right, manhauling sleds is not the way to go.
