Surprise Garden

Surprise Garden
You drive north from San Francisco along the wild, mostly undeveloped coast. You pass through a few tiny coastal towns. Finally you reach the first "metropolis" on northern Highway 1, a (somewhat larger) small town called Fort Bragg.

And here you find a surprise: this is a former logging town turned tourist stop which has a first-class botanical garden! Not a thing you usually find in small towns.

It's my kind of garden, with winding paths, surprises around the corners, something blooming every day of the year. Your path ends at the great booming Pacific Ocean.

Joan+, Tim Hanko, Clint have particularly liked this photo

Wish I had known. I was there for a second visit last April and the town looked as I remembered it, somewhat rundown. Didn't know to look for this.
