The Great forests of Haida Land, 1976, page 11
( This is the story of a backpack through a great Canadian rain forest in the Queen Charlotte islands, long ago.)

Salmon eggs.

We Californians knew enough to carry extra food in Canada, in case our pickup plane was delayed. But we thoughtlessly ended up with nothing except a bag of biscuit mix and a bag of oatmeal. It was time to live off the land.

Brilliantly colored salmon were running up the forest streams by the thousands. They were so obsessed with their purpose that they seemed angry. They were eating nothing; indeed their stomachs had atrophied. Nevertheless, one of our Canadians pulled out some rudimentary fishing gear and a scrap of jerky, leaned over a pool and tapped it against the snouts of the fish as they swam by. Soon an irritable salmon snapped at it and we had our fish.

But not to eat. Migrating salmon close to the spawning grounds are running on empty. Cooked, their flesh is not firm and colorful, but greyish, soft, tasteless. Instead my friends thanked that fierce lady for her eggs. Used them for bait. After that, every few casts into wild Awun Lake produced a nice native trout. We had a splendid dinner.

An interesting thing about the guy in the picture you put in the comments ... styles have cycled through all the options enough that this picture could be a young man today.
