The Great Forests of Haida Land, 1976, page 7
(These are old Kodachromes of a hiking trip in the wild Queen Charlotte Islands, now called Haida Gwaii...)

Look carefully at the matted grass at my feet above. It’s the throne of the Chief of the Island Bears, where he obviously liked to relax and survey his territory. He probably watched us for hours as we labored under our heavy packs, climbing the slope below him.

We spent several days camped in one spot on the top of this ridge. As we set up our tents, a big bear appeared on the other side of a steep gully. We had been told there were no grizzlies in the islands, but this guy was so big and unafraid I thought he was a young male griz until I saw the telltale downslope of his shoulders.

Of course! At the top of the island one would find the King of the Island Bears.

He was a black bear. We knew he would not attack us. But he did not fear us. He hung around while we were there, close (though always out of my old camera’s range). To make his feelings absolutely clear, he dared to leave a steaming pile of bear dung next to our latrine.

What emotions he must have felt when, after four days, his stern demeanor finally made us go away.
Other page of this story are in my album, Great Trees of Haida Land.

The King certainly had his throne at the right place: a very impressive scene. Great story and carving.

Great view and a great story, Laurie. King indeed to be enthroned up there.
