The Great Forests of Haida Land, 1976, page 1
These mystical, magical islands were the Charlottes, now called Haida Gwaii, off the coast of British Columbia.

I’ve been going through my old Kodachrome slides, and I’d like to tell you about a fine backpacking trip we took on the biggest of those islands in 1976, if you feel like listening.

The remote Queen Charlotte Islands were examples of island evolution, where some living things had evolved a little differently since they were cut off from the mainland. In the mid-70s the islands were also magnificent examples of old-growth temperate rain forest. But the death knell had rung for those great trees. Down in California we heard that
serious clear cutting was beginning on Graham Island.

There were hardly any climax old-growth temperate rain forests left in the world. If we were ever going to see one, we had to get up there soon. Six experienced backpackers, four Americans and two Canadians, organized a trip. We met in Vancouver airport, climbed aboard a charter plane, and were off for QCI.

The rest of this photo-story is in my album, The Great Trees of Haida Land
Laurie.

Tim Hanko, John McKay, Nehad have particularly liked this photo

I'd thought Canada was better at protecting such places...shame they're gone.

A few areas were spared the clear cutting. I have camped many times on Haida Gwaii, it is a mystical wonderous place.

Neat series Laurie!
........inspired me to see if I could find some of the only dozen or so photos I took when I went up there in the fall of 1973........living there for about 6 months under slightly different circumstances after having been force transferred from a comfortable comm./nav tech position in the B.C. Okanagan to the Sandspit Airport on Haida Gwaii..........had something to do with a less than diplomatic conversation I had with a manager not long after a labour dispute we had across Canada........:-)
.........interesting in your descriptions to hear the difference in your awareness of the natural environment compared to my 23 year old mentality at that time......as much of a nature lover that I was:-)
........logging camps were already well established by MacBlo when I was there.........
