From the California Gold Rush:

From the California Gold Rush:
Here's an odd little Book of Psalms in verse. It crossed the thousand miles between St. Louis and San Francisco in 1850. In the pocket of a nine year old girl named Kate, my ancestor, who walked the whole way behind a covered wagon. (Only in movies did healthy people ride as passengers in those springless old Conestogas.)

OK, you are going to have to turn this into one of your stories. I want to hear more about Kate and her family's journey.

Don't I wish! But I have no other photos.

I can add one thing: Now that I think of it, I remember that she didn't walk the whole thousand miles. Her family was well outfitted, and she started from St. Louis on a fine child-sized pony. Which was pretty quickly stolen. Her father, who was a no-nonsense type, got it back. (I visualize him riding Hollywood-style into an Indian encampment...more likely, he intercepted its resale to some other pioneer.)

Less than a week later, her pretty pony was stolen again. This time they went on without it, and poor sad Kate had to walk.

What a marvellous family keepsake, and such a great provenance. It's great that the family story has been remembered, that has to be quite remarkable in itself I'd think.

That's a wonderful keepsake and a wonderful story. It's interesting how different the well known psalm is. The meaning is the same but the order of the words is so different from what we usually see today.
