Coast of California: Duane Flatmo

Coast of California: Duane Flatmo
Last time I told you about the stuffy gentleman's club in Eureka. Now I'd like to introduce you to a Eurekan who is the total opposite: artist and free spirit, Duane Flatmo.

These are my photos of some of the town's many murals, belonging to very different schools. It's fun is to tour the town, seeing if you can name the famous artists whose styles are being emulated. Then you discover that these four murals and many more were all painted by the same person, Duane, and his assistants, the Rural Burl Mural Bureau (say THAT out loud!)

A few years ago Duane gave a memorable performance on national television, yes, also fun. Click here

He does kinetic sculpture. Eureka and nearby Arcata are the original home of the annual kinetic sculpture race, which requires you to put wheels and floats on your sculpture and pedal it like a bicycle across both land and water. He has won top awards in the race numerous times. You can see why here. and here.

Lately Duane has taken his sculptures to new heights at Burning Man. I can't afford the ticket and, being a wise and really old desert hand, I would never run around without my clothes in the middle of Black Rock Desert in late August anyway. But you and I can glimpse his Burning Man efforts here.

Larry He's So Fine, Tim Hanko have particularly liked this photo

Really impressive work. And then I became diverted looking up details of Burning Man (had never heard of it previously) ..... time escapes!

Cool murals! And thanks for the links. The world needs more Duane Flatmos and fewer stuffy businessmen. We stumbled onto Ferndale, CA and the little museum dedicated to the kinetic sculpture race a few years ago. It would be a blast to see the race sometime. We have a pretty good similar event near here in Port Townsend, WA. I've always sort of wanted to see Burning Man, but have never quite had the courage or stamina! A friend went one year and said the dust and heat were pretty awful!
