Mr. Carson's House

Mr. Carson's House
William Carson was a redwood baron. As the great coastal forest was decimated and its lumber shipped from his town of Eureka, he became a millionaire. Mr. Carson didn't know much about architecture, or for that matter, good taste. He planned his house based on one concept: if you got it, flaunt it.

His descendants finally put the house up for sale in the 1950s. A group of the most affluent men in Eureka decided it would be an adventure to buy the old house and restore it. For that purpose, they formed the Ingomar Club. But as time went by, the focus shifted from preserving the amusing old mansion to secluding the club members themselves, locked safely away from the town's hoi-polloi (including all women.)

In this small remote city of about 30,000, this is an old-fashioned gentlemen's club which equals those in the great cities when it comes to snobbery.

Taking this pic, I got the feeling that someone was behind those long white curtains, watching us. I debated whether to snap to attention and give a comic salute or to blow them a great big exaggerated kiss.

Splendid.....it stands out all the more in that rather controlled and clipped setting!

Interesting (as always). I was up there only once and the entire region was covered by dense fog so I didn't see much of the town. Ferndale was on the agenda as well, but it was as bad as here :-/ , Cheers, Lutz

I've seen this mansion when I've been in Eureka and it truly is a fantastic bit of architecture. It may not be to everyone's taste, but you can't deny it has a certain exuberant charm. I got the same impression as you when I just stood looking at it from the sidewalk, let alone taking a photo of it. What a strange anachronism, the private "men only" club is. There must be some wealthy fellas in Eureka to keep up the maintenance on this grand old place.

Ha ha sure looks different, but give me a bench in the park or a stool in the saloon with the hoi-polloi (and the women). 8-)
