Edge of the Redwood Forest

Edge of the Redwood Forest
The tall conservative coast redwoods stand back from the sea, behind smaller, rounder trees. Even better, they hide behind a ridge.

The redwood forest was ferociously and almost completely logged in 70 years, starting in 1850. I arrived on the scene after the tree holocaust had ended. But even though I was just a little kid, I too was depressed by the many miles of stumps and eroded soil.

Today, the gigantic mature trees, taller than the Statue of Liberty, are found only in the parks.

Luckily, I guess, very young redwoods are designed to grow fast. Wherever soil remains, the coastal mountains are green again. But it would take more than 1000 years to replace the old giants.

Mitch Seaver, William Sutherland, tiabunna, Tim Hanko have particularly liked this photo

Two other species of tall trees, the Sitka Spruce and the Douglas Fir, dare to grow much closer to the sea, and pay the price:

Visited the coastal redwood country in the early 80s, when we were living in Seattle. Coming down from the Northwet, I was not expecting to be impressed by trees, but--

This is the next corner of California I need to explore. I've only caught a hint of the redwoods.
