The Lost Coast

The Lost Coast
After hundreds of miles negotiating spectacular cliffs and mountainsides, this is where California's Highway 1 gives up, cuts inland, and ends. There are no paved roads paralleling the ocean for forty miles or so, north of here.

With an accurate tide table, an old fashioned USGS topo map, and strong legs for climbing, you can backpack the Lost Coast in 3 or 4 days.

If you have a 4 wheel drive vehicle and the weather has been dry, you can still drive the old dirt road which runs north along the crest of these rugged mountains, the same road that Jack London described in his book, Four Horses and a Sailor, 135 years ago.

You can see, in the small-town mural below, that Jack's four-in-hand became three before the Lost Coast was finished with them.
