Bush Bunny

Bush Bunny
Officially, this is the Brush Rabbit, smallest of the cottontails. Widely distributed along the west coast, right down to the ocean. Very conservative, active at dawn and dusk, never far from cover.

Once, in our little village, a pet black rabbit got loose and joined the bush bunnies.

Blacky was considered very tame, but he quickly assumed the world view of the wild rabbits. All attempts at enticing him back failed. He lurked with his little counterparts in their small territory, so we continued to see him, mostly in the early morning when people were driving to work.

Surprisingly, he lasted three glorious months in Bush Bunny World, before the inevitable happened (perhaps a fox).

Hopefully, Blacky got a chance to sow his wild oats before heading off to the Big Clover Field in the Sky.

A girl I dated had a similar story about a dog, She lived in rural Kentucky surrounded by fields, and her father had a big back Labrador I called the behemoth. One day, the behemoth got out and joined a pack of wild dogs roaming the region. Sometime it would stalk the edge of the fields an taunt the girl's father, then went running back into the fields to cause trouble. A car on the highway eventually ended that tale.

The story's more fun with rabbits.
