Highway 1

Highway 1
The price we pay for having a world-class scenic highway so close to the edge of the continent is this: it really wants to slide into the ocean.

Back in the day, Highway 1 was closed at some point almost every winter. We were lucky if it was only closed for a couple of weeks. Once or twice it was closed for a couple of years.

Then something happened. Driving Hwy 1 today, I like to imagine the state's chief highway engineer in 1970 as a doughty old guy who had once handled a lot of dynamite and rappelled a few dam faces between concrete pours. Seen everything, afraid of nothing. Squinting, chewing on his cold cigar, he slams his fist on his desk and says "Enough! Take care of this g-d- thing once and for all!"

So now we have added to the spectacular views, an array of large and interesting engineering efforts. Spiced with the rather frequent traces of disobedient rocks and dirt that have just been bulldozed off the pavement.

Tim Hanko has particularly liked this photo

I do enjoy hearing the stories behind your images.
The bridges all down that west coast were a feature of our time there so long ago (partner was a civil engineer, so we detoured for almost every bridge or dam, it seemed some days )

The nation was full of that exact kind of engineer at one time. Their once-and-for-all solutions make really big splashes when they fall in the ocean.

That's quite a scar, but nothing stands in the way of progress.

Wonderful shot and excellent commentary. We've gotten as far as northern Cal, but must make the rest of the trip.

I would wager that those hills will just keep on sliding down into the sea no matter what we do!
